People With Disability

People with disabilities need assistance and support for a good quality of life and participating in social and economic life on an equally. For instance, a sign language interpreter enables a deaf person to work in a mainstream professional environment.

COMHESWA values people’s dignity, prioritizes people with disabilities, carries out programs for assistance and support. Advocates for participating in society. Economic activeness/empowerment, policy analysis, involvement in decisions about the support they receive is encouraged. Referral and linkages are also made to opportunities including supporting tools, economic opportunities and other health services. While family members encouraged to engage in income-generating activities.

Among other issues COMHESWA considers include:

  • Information and advice services – including professional, peer support, advocacy, and supported decision-making.
  • Support in education or employment – such as a classroom assistant for a child/youth with a disability, or personal support in the workplace.
  • Communication support – such as sign language interpreters.
  • Community access – including day care centres.
