Gender-based violence (GBV) affects communities worldwide, deeply impacting individuals, families, and social structures. Addressing this issue requires not only awareness but active participation from all community members, especially men, who play a critical role in prevention efforts.
Our male engagement intervention is aimed at involving men and promoting their role in preventing GBV within their communities. By addressing cultural norms and behaviors, this program seeks to foster respectful and supportive attitudes that will contribute to reducing and preventing gender-based violence.
Community-Based Approach: Participatory Theatre for Development
Our intervention is conducted at the community level through a unique method—Participatory Theatre for Development. This approach invites community members, especially men, to actively engage in discussions and explore solutions for preventing gender-based violence. Community theatre acts as a platform for expression and dialogue, allowing participants to confront the realities of GBV in a supportive and open environment.
Gathering the Community
To ensure widespread participation, the intervention leverages several advertising and outreach methods:
- Public Address Systems: Announcements are made in local neighborhoods to encourage attendance.
- Radio Broadcasts: Local radio stations help to reach a broad audience, emphasizing the importance of male engagement in GBV prevention.
- Information, Education, and Communication Materials (IECs): Flyers, posters, and brochures provide valuable information on the event and its objectives.
These efforts prioritize the involvement of men, encouraging them to participate and take a stand against gender-based violence.
Using Theatre to Spark Dialogue and Solutions
The community theatre sessions are designed not just to entertain but to educate and provoke thought. Through role-playing and dramatizations, these performances portray real-life scenarios that depict the roots and consequences of GBV. Following the performances, facilitators lead discussions with community members, inviting them to share their views, challenge harmful norms, and propose actionable solutions.
This inclusive approach empowers participants to:
- Recognize Harmful Traditions and Behaviors: The theatre performances reflect common yet harmful cultural practices that perpetuate GBV.
- Discuss and Develop Solutions: Through dialogue, the community can identify practical, culturally appropriate ways to address and reduce GBV.
- Foster a Community of Support: As men engage in these discussions, they become advocates for change, supporting each other and encouraging respectful relationships.
A Community-Led Path Toward Change
This program embraces the values and traditions of each community, working within its unique cultural context to promote sustainable change. By focusing on male engagement and empowering communities to find their own solutions, we are fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, feels safe and respected.
Join us in creating a safer, more inclusive community.
